Dark and Darker Beginner's Guide

A practical roadmap to your first successful extractions

Dark and Darker is an extraction dungeon crawler: you drop into a dark, monster-filled dungeon with the gear you brought, fight mobs and other players for loot, and try to reach an escape portal before the encroaching darkness kills you. If you get out alive, you keep everything you found. If you die, you lose the gear you went in with. That loop - risk your kit, come out richer or with nothing - is what makes every run tense, and it's why understanding the fundamentals matters more than raw reflexes when you're starting out.

How a raid actually flows

Every run has the same rhythm: explore, loot, fight, then extract. - Explore carefully. Sound is information - footsteps, chests opening and spells all carry. Move deliberately and listen before you commit to a room. - Loot with purpose. Open chests, search piles and pick up what upgrades you, but don't overstay: the map periodically shrinks as darkness or gas closes in, forcing everyone toward the center and the exits. - Fight on your terms. You rarely have to take a fight. Pick engagements where you have the advantage - a doorway, a corner, full health - and disengage when you don't. - Extract. Escape portals spawn around the map. Getting to one and channeling it is how you bank your loot. Many deaths happen at portals, so watch your back while you escape.

Choosing your first class

Your class decides your whole playstyle, so pick one that matches how you like to play - and, as a beginner, one that forgives mistakes. - Fighter is the classic starting point: durable, flexible with almost any weapon, and equipped with a self-heal and a sprint. It teaches you the game without punishing you too hard. - Barbarian is simple and powerful in melee - huge health and big two-handed hits - though it's slow and vulnerable to ranged kiting. - Cleric is forgiving too: heavy armor, heals and solid melee. More technical classes - Rogue, Ranger, Wizard, Warlock, Druid, Sorcerer - have higher ceilings but punish poor positioning. When you've picked one, read its full class guide to learn its kit, then plan a loadout.

Reading your gear and stats

In Dark and Darker your power comes almost entirely from what you wear. Every piece of gear carries attributes (Strength, Vigor, Agility, Dexterity, Will, Knowledge, Resourcefulness) that feed into what you actually feel in a fight: health, weapon and magic damage, action speed, move speed and damage reduction. Rarity (from common up to legendary and unique) and a build's total gear score tell you roughly how strong a kit is. The key beginner insight: a single ring, weapon or armor swap can change your survivability or damage far more than you'd expect. Before you spend gold on gear, drop it into the build calculator and watch your real numbers update live - it's the fastest way to learn what actually matters for your class.

Beginner mistakes that get you killed

- Fighting everything. You don't win by killing the most players; you win by extracting with loot. Skip fights you don't need. - Overloading on gear you can't afford to lose. Early on, run cheap kits. Losing a bad kit costs nothing; losing your best one hurts. - Ignoring sound. Sprinting everywhere announces your position. Walk, listen, and use crouch in dangerous areas. - Panicking at the portal. Escapes take time to channel - clear the area first and keep an eye on approaches while you leave. - Standing still to cast or reload in the open. Break line of sight, use cover, and reposition constantly.

Where to go next

Once you're comfortable with the loop, the fastest way to improve is to commit to one class and learn it deeply. Read its class guide for playstyle and build directions, browse community builds to see what works, and use the build calculator to test your own ideas before you take them into a raid. Progress in Dark and Darker comes from good decisions repeated - not from any single lucky run.
